USS Newcomb DD-586 was a square-bridge Fletcher-class destroyer built at the Boston Navy Yard and was the 125th of her class. Launched and commissioned in 1943, Newcomb participated in the invasion of Saipan and Tinian, Palau, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

On April 6th, 1945, while off the coast of Okinawa, Newcomb was attacked by seven Kamikazes and hit by four to five of them, killing 40 of her crew and wounding 24. It took ten weeks of repair to make her sufficiently seaworthy for the two month tow back to the United States. By the time she arrived the war was nearly over and she was scrapped instead of repaired.
